Studio Pandan is a Berlin-based design studio with a flair for detail and an imaginative outlook. A playful sensibility informs our approach to identity systems across print and digital, as well as our design for standalone publications and websites. We take great care in creating an active dialogue with our clients, often forging long-term relationships in the process, and connecting the dots with our conceptually-driven, individually-tailored solutions. It’s our belief that a successful outcome reflects a client’s intentions back to them, while also making visible something new – it’s a magic mirror, crystal clear and occasionally beguiling. In our research-heavy process, we are deeply committed to the ways in which design can add new layers of meaning to a project.
Since forming in 2015, typography has been our regular tool of choice, which we wield with wit, criticality and spark. In our practice, we dance between roles and categories, donning the construction planner’s hard hat when laying out your website’s grid, the eye of a curator when selecting shades for your identity and the heroine’s sword when traversing a maze of styles – leaving no stone unturned from concept to production. Our hands-on team is actively engaged in contemporary art and cultural scenes, bringing expertise and varied perspectives to projects of all scales. Alongside running the studio, our co-founders Ann Richter and Pia Christmann regularly lecture and host workshops at various art and design institutions.

Biographies
Ann Richter studied visual communication at the State Academy for Visual Arts in Stuttgart and graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. Before founding Studio Pandan, she worked at various international design agencies, including Graphic Thought Facility (London), Project Projects (New York City) and Heimann und Schwantes (Berlin). As co-founder of the collective A.R. practice, she realises projects at the interface between design and curatorial practice, which have been shown at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin and published by Onomatopee, among others. In addition to questions of current visual culture, she is concerned with feminism and her Southeast Asian roots, e.g. how to prepare the best Siaopao.
Pia Christmann studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig with Markus Dressen, Oliver Klimpel and Maureen Mooren. She completed her studies with a diploma cum laude. She was chosen by Wallpaper* magazine as one of the best graduates of the year in the field of visual communication with her visual essay "But what matters today isn't work but idleness", which explores productive boredom, inspiring idleness or, more generally, the relationship between work and leisure. She is interested in abstract thinking, coincidences and always flips through books from back to front.

In addition to probing contemporary visual culture, you’ll often find Ann reading up on feminism or exploring her Southeast Asian roots, such as perfecting the art of Siopao.
Pia Christmann is co-founder of Studio Pandan, where she manages the day-to-day operations of the studio while also surfacing original visual approaches. Ann Richter is co-founder of Studio Pandan, where she spins many organisational plates and lends her systematic thinking to a variety of design mediums. Prior to setting up the studio, Ann worked at various international design agencies including Graphic Thought Facility in London, Project Projects in New York and Heimann und Schwantes in Berlin. She is also one half of A.R. practice, which devices of projects that sit at the intersection between design and curating; the duo’s work has been shown at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin and published by Onomatopee, amongst others. Ann studied visual communication at the State Academy for Visual Arts in Stuttgart and graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig.
Before starting the practice, Pia studied at the Academy Fine Arts Leipzig with professors Markus Dressen, Oliver Klimpel and Maureen Mooren, completing her studies with a diploma cum laude. She was later selected by Wallpaper* magazine as a Best Graduate of the Year in the field of visual communication for her visual essay “But what matters today isn’t work but idleness”, which explores productive boredom, inspiring idleness and, more generally, the relationship between work and leisure. Both inside and outside of the office, Pia is interested in abstract thinking, coincidences and she always flips through books from back to front.
