AMOK, Nadine Fecht
The artist’s book AMOK by Nadine Fecht was published to accompany her solo show at the Kunsthalle Mannheim, though it extends far beyond an exhibition catalogue. With this book, various thematic complexes of her artistic work are presented in a coherent manner for a better understanding of her oeuvre, which is characterized above all by the extended concept of drawing. Nadine Fecht’s works are conceptual, at first glance mostly quiet, but radical. Her use of colour is reduced and deliberate. These are precisely the aspects we have applied to the book design. Some parts of the publication are in black and white, while the exhibition views are in colour and certain series have been given an additional spot colour. In the work Surplus, for example, neon orange is used, because the wall piece consists of luminous price labels. Melancholia and Close Reading flash red elements, because red has an important meaning in these works. On the cover, we used black scratch-off varnish to allow traces of time to become visible—transforming each book cover into an individual drawing. Whoever attended a book presentation given by the artist was able to obtain a scratched signature from her. Those who cannot stop scratching will eventually be able to see the complete motif, the artwork hidden behind the varnish. However, at the same time, the title and name of the artist will disappear—a side effect that Nadine Fecht appreciates, since the focus is on the work and not on her person.
